  1. Computer Help

It can be frustrating when computer technology doesn't work exactly how we want. Especially since computers are essential in our online classroom environment. We have many people and tools to help resolve any issues you might have. We encourage you to write down the IT Help number on a paper in case you can't get to this page. You may want to put it, along with other important Independence University numbers, in your phone contact list.

There are two aspects to effectively managing computers: preventative measures and corrective measures. Below we offer some guidance you can use proactively, developing self-reliance, to keep your computer technology working smoothly. The suggestions below are based on our experience and a) do not include all the possible issues that can arise, and b) may not work in every situation. Your computer connection to the courses is actually a complex network of software and hardware, much of which you control more than we do. As with everything we try to do with you, we encourage you to explore solutions on your own but do not spend too much time or let yourself get upset. If your initial efforts to solve a computer problem fail, call us at the IT Help Line. If that doesn't work, notify your instructor or the regular help line (855.880.3121). School moves fast and we want you to be current in your courses and happy as you study.

    Preventative Measures:

Prevention of problems is always preferred to correcting them. Here are some ways you can prevent computer problems from happening and help quickly correct problems if they do occur.

    * Have a hard copy of key computer information - This includes serial numbers for your computer, information on your Internet connection, passwords for your computer, Canvas, and other sites. Keep this information in an easy-to-access centralized place, like a folder with computer info. In the folder you could also include information like user manuals that come with your computer.

*Get antivirus software - There are a number of good antivirus programs out there. Use one.

*Be smart about using the computer - The computer Independence University has provided you is for your education. It is a tool. It is also not yours until after you successfully graduate. Respect it and yourself by using the computer wisely. Many of the computer problems we have from students are self-inflicted because they have visited high-risk sites and been infected with viruses. High-risk sites include pornographic sites, gambling, links clicked on from email that you did not ask for, and some gaming sites. Visit only sites with good reputations. Follow basic computer safety rules.

*Don't eat or drink around the computer - Coffee is a notorious destroyer of laptops. We can end up spending a lot of time with our computer and it is tempting to have the nice drink right next to us. Don't do it. Put the drink on a separate table, on a chair next to you, or on the floor. You do not want to pay for expensive repairs or replacement of your computer. You also don't want to have to wait for those repairs or replacement--class keeps going even if the computer is down.

*Do not let others use your computer - Others may not respect your computer like you do. Even if they want to, you still may not know what they have done or changed accidentally. The computer is an essential tool for your education. Once you graduate, you can let everyone else use the computer if you want. Right now, the tool needs to be protected.
